British & Irish Lions vs Hurricanes Live

Having lost the first Test to New Zealand on Saturday, the British & Irish Lions will begin their preparations for the second showdown with the All Blacks when they take on the Hurricanes on Tuesday.

After a determined performance, head coach Warren Gatland’s side were eventually undone by the class of the world champions at Eden Park, succumbing to a 30-15 loss to New Zealand. Improvements will need to be made if they’re to keep the series alive when they next come face-to-face with the All Blacks.

The Hurricanes will pose a tough test, though, as they are the Super Rugby champions and a team boasting some excellent players.

Team news

Surplus to requirements twice last week, George North and Jonathan Joseph have a chance to revive their tours with a big performance in the Kiwi capital. Both would have had high hopes of being Test starters before boarding the plane.

Courtney Lawes – arguably the form lock in the northern hemisphere in 2017 – again starts as he looks to sneak into the Test squad, while the versatile Jack Nowell is at full back.

Having played 80 minutes at Eden Park, George Kruis is on the bench, while Rory Best captains as the midweek side look to build on their impressive victory over the Chiefs.

But the Hurricanes – Super Rugby champions – will be considerably stronger than the opposition in Hamilton, with a handful of All Blacks released, such as the prolific Julian Savea.

All Blacks head coach Steve Hansen has sprung a surprise on the left-wing, though, handing Rieko Ioane a first Test start instead of the more experienced Julian Savea.
Elsewhere, World Cup winner Sonny Bill Williams lines up in midfield with a fit-again Ryan Crotty, with Crotty replacing Anton Lienert-Brown following last week’s 78-0 victory over Samoa.

All Blacks coach Steve Hansen said: “They’ve both been on target to return for this game all the way through, are both in great shape and, together with the rest of the squad, they’re really excited at what’s ahead of us.

Ioane was something of a surprise to make his first start on the wing for the All Blacks, given Savea’s phenomenal strike rate and virtual first-choice status since making his debut in 2012.

He has scored 46 tries in 53 tests.

Hansen said the 20-year-old had earned his spot after showing superb form for the Auckland Blues this season.

It will be the third time he has faced the Lions on tour, having also played for the Blues and Maori All Blacks.

A crowd in excess of 60,000 fans will pack Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane.

This is part of Pacquiao’s unofficial farewell tour, more or less. His days of fighting the absolute best appear to be over, but it’s still a great spectacle to watch him compete. After a slow start to the tour the Lions have won their two most recent warm-up matches, but Saturday’s Test will be just that. A massive test.

The British and Irish Lions face their toughest examination of the 2017 tour of New Zealand so far on Saturday, as they take on the All Blacks in the first of three Test matches.

The Lions are coming off a win over Super Rugby side Chiefs but have already suffered losses against Blues and Highlanders, while the hosts are coming off a huge 78-0 win over Samoa.

With 14 wins in their last 15 Tests―only Ireland have knocked them off their perch―the All Blacks are in sensational form.

As reported by Patrick McKendry of the New Zealand Herald, Lions head coach Warren Gatland knows his team will have to play at a high level to have any chance of winning:

With Billy Vunipola and Ben Youngs no longer in the squad, the Lions have taken some hits during the tour. The visitors still boast tremendous talent―replacing scrum-half Youngs with a star such as Greig Laidlaw is a unique luxury―but the same holds true for the All Blacks.

Ardie Savea will move to the bench to make way for the returning Kieran Read, who will captain the side. Rieko Ioane, the 20-year-old who faced the Lions for the Blues, will also start, per the team’s official website.

Gatland, a native Kiwi, has hinted at a more adventurous tactical plan as opposed to the team’s reliance on the breakdown and kicking game, but given the All Blacks’ incredible ability on the counter and strength out wide, that may not be such a great idea.

THE TEAMS

It’s been short and it can definitely be sweet for Robin McBryde if his shadow Welsh team can conquer the sweltering humidity and a wounded Samoa in Apia on Friday.

The Pacific Islanders head into the contest on the back of a thumping 78-0 defeat to the All Blacks a week agor while only hours earlier Wales were beating Tonga 24-6 at the same Eden Park venue, in Auckland.

But much has changed with McBryde without scrum-half Gareth Davies, prop Tomas Francis, hooker Kristian Dacey and lock Cory Hill to Lions call-ups while wing Alex Cuthbert, a try scorer against Tonga is ruled out with injury.

The 22-year-old former Wales Under-20 captain is one of seven changes to the starting line-up which helped defeat Tonga in Eden Park last Friday. In the backs, Aled Davies makes his first international start at scrum-half, Tyler Morgan lines up at outside centre, and Cory Allen is named on the right wing.

Two of last week’s debutants, hooker Ryan Elias and tighthead Dillon Lewis, also make their first starts, with openside Ellis Jenkins another player to be promoted from the bench.

State of Origin 2017 Live

New South Wales Blues are one victory away from winning the State of Origin series for just the second time in 12 years and face off with the Queensland Maroons in Game 2 at ANZ Stadium in Sydney on Wednesday.

The Blues thrashed the Maroons 28-4 in Game 1 at Suncorp Stadium on May 31 and now have the chance to seal a first State of Origin win since 2014 on home soil.

Per News.com.au, the Maroons are likely to be boosted by the return of playmaker Johnathan Thurston, who missed Game 1 with a shoulder injury but is “a definite starter” for Wednesday, according to skipper Cameron Smith.

Maroons coach Kevin Walters has overhauled his side for Game 2 as he looks to mastermind a comeback victory in the series and extend Queensland’s winning run to three in a row.

Along with Thurston, Billy Slater and Gavin Cooper also return to the side, while Nate Myles, Sam Thaiday, Jacob Lillyman, Corey Oates, Aidan Guerra and Justin O’Neill are all dropped, and Anthony Milford is injured.

Valentine Holmes, Coen Hess, Tim Glasby and Jarrod Wallace have all been handed debuts, per NRL:

It is the first time the Blues have named an unchanged State of Origin side in 21 years, and coach Laurie Daley said he was delighted to be able to pick the same players, per Matt Encarnacion of the Australian Associated Press (h/t Stuff.co.nz):

“It’s great to be able to name the same 17 guys again. They did such a great job in game one. But the key for us is to try and repeat that performance.”

A repeat of the hammering the Blues handed out in Game 1 is unlikely.

Per Sporting Life’s Ian Millward, the Maroons’ squad for Game 2 looks much better equipped to deal with the Blues and Thurston’s return could prove crucial in a potentially tight encounter.

Certainly NSW are likely to have to work harder to earn scores than they did at the end of May as the Maroons now boast a potent blend of youth and experience.

Nerves could play a crucial role on Wednesday. The Blues have largely been starved of State of Origin triumphs for over a decade.

Their 2014 victory marked a first shield win since 2005, so they will desperate to convert their Game 1 triumph into a series win, and they will want to get it done sooner rather than later.

Should the Maroons take an early lead and show that they will not be bullied as they were in Game 1, the tension inside Sydney’s ANZ Stadium will ratchet up and could have a major influence on the outcome of the match.
